Trapped in a futile gambit of my design to hold a cup of the divine.
mmmmmeeeee - Solace (Exploid Remix)(demo)
At the time of trying to write Solace I was well-accquainted with EDM producer Exploid, and after hearing my second demo for the track requested a MIDI file of it. About a half hour later he sent back this. Significantly more mass appeal and more competently produced than my demos, I took the springwave (at least that’s what I call it) and threw it on my project at several points, and programmed a more conventional two-step beat that saw significant use in the track.
Exactly why Exploid wanted to make this I don’t remember in the slightest but I do recall waiting for a while to hear his finished version. These sorts of unfulfilled expectations and increasing divide in interests eventually resulted in an awkwardly broken-up friendship. Eh.
mmmmeee - Solace (demo 2)
The second demo of Solace, and the first thing I produced out of FL Studio 10
So, I have this really cool demo I made at school, right? A smart musician would have a flash drive on them and would have rendered both a wav file and a MIDI sequence to be used elsewhere. I am not a smart musician. Thus, when I first opened FL Studio I fumbled around like a moron in an attempt to recreate the demo from memory, resulting in it being pitched down from F minor to D# minor and the melodies becoming more complex (except for the bassline because it didn’t occur to me until late into production that maybe it should be more than one constant note)
It also ended up really fucking loud and muddy because I did not (and still don’t) have any idea how to mix anything whatsoever, and had no idea how the fruity loops worked yet.
Rob|и - Solace (Original Version) (Artifacts)
At the beginning of the year I made this song to try and get back in the groove after a month of not doing anything music related at all
I think to bookend the year I’ll take everything I’ve learned since then and reproduce it so watch this space for it
Exploid’s demo was enough to kick my brain into high gear. I took the same MIDI I sent to him and used it in Reason 4, at which point I began to put several hours of hard work into producing the final form of the track — at least, it seemed like it would be the final form at the time. Even so, I shortcutted a lot of things (you hear the same two drum fills at different times in the track and instead of having an actual bass sweep to transition from section to section I took a fake 808 bass kick and reversed it). Nothing is equalized right and the drums were still flat save for the kick, which I still very much like.
Even with all of Solace’s flaws I was and still am quite proud of it. I simply think I can do even better now, here in December.
[REMIX] Koji Kondo - File Select (Super Mario 64)
Ten months ago two guys decided to remix this theme. Ten months later one of them had his done for ten months and the other finally got around to it. And neither one was very impressive.
Nine Inch Nails - 1,000,000 (Fractured)
I fuck up all the mixing
So loud and fucking muddy
I feel like dying right about now
How the fuck can you listen to me
